What We'll Do
-
Step 1
For this step you'll need:
- 2 Pie Pumpkins
Preheat your oven to 400˚F (205˚C). Gather your Pie Pumpkins for preparation. You need to use Pie Pumpkins, not normal Carving Pumpkins for this recipe. Pie Pumpkins are sweeter than regular carving pumpkins. Each pumpkin will weigh about 6 lbs (3 kg) each. In the picture below, I show 3 Pie Pumpkins which I did turn into pumpkin puree but you will only need 2 for this recipe.
-
Step 2
For this step you'll need:
Cut off the top of the pumpkin to remove the stem and also to get a flat surface. Then, turn it over onto this new flat surface and cut the pumpkin in half.
-
Step 3
For this step you'll need:
Using an ice cream scooper, scrape out the seeds from inside of the pumpkins. If you want, you can dry out the seeds and attempt to plant them to grow your very own pie pumpkins! If not, simply toss them into the composter.
-
Step 4
For this step you'll need:
Put a sheet of tinfoil on a cookie sheet and place your pumpkin halves face up. Then, lightly oil both of them with about 2 Tbsp of olive oil.
-
Step 5
For this step you'll need:
- Your Oven :-)
After oiling your pumpkin halves, flip them over so they are laying face down and roast them for 40 minutes in your preheated 400˚F (205˚C) oven.
-
Step 6
For this step you'll need:
- Spoon
- Food Processor
- Blender
When fully roasted, your pumpkin halves should be super duper soft. Using a spoon, scrape the insides out (don't include their skins) and blend it in a food process or a blender until your pumpkin puree is smooth.

The Best Part!
For this step you'll need:
- A Recipe That Calls For Pumpkin Puree
- Your Appetite :-)
Congratulations! You just made fresh pumpkin puree in 6 easy steps! You can use it as a delicious fresh ingredient in a pumpkin recipe such as Pumpkin Cake Roll or Pumpkin Nut Bread. Or, if you need to store it for a few days, keep it in an air tight container in your fridge and it should last about 1-2 weeks. I hope you like it! :-)
